Amazon Redshift Cluster Set-up Steps to Connect With Pentaho PDI
Step 1: Registering for AWS and login
First of all, visit Amazon AWS and register into an AWS account.
Step 2: AWS Management Console
This is the home page for AWS and the place where we can view all the product services provided by Amazon.
Step 3: Create a Redshift Cluster
From the AWS Management Console Log into Redshift and click on “Launch Cluster“ to create a Redshift cluster. Provide the cluster’s basic information such as the Database Name, Database Port, Cluster Identifier, Master Password, and Master User Name
Once you are done with the cluster configuration, then provide the information on the Node Configuration page. Decide the suitable number of nodes to store your data.
Step 4: Changing the Security User Group in EC2
Clients cannot connect to the Redshift database if we are not allowing the IP and TCP port accessible to the security group.
To allow the IP and TCP port accessible click on EC2 Dashboard (from the AWS Management Console) and select the Security Group Tab. From the security groups, you need to change the Inbound rule for the security group.
Step 5: Using Pentaho PDI/Kettle to Access Redshift
Accessing Redshift using Kettle is straightforward once you have properly configured the cluster as mentioned above.
In the Redshift Dashboard, move to the “Connect Client” section of the tab and select the drivers. Download the driver as per your requirement and place it in the lib folder.
In the Database Connection section of the Kettle, select Connection Type as: Redshift. Give the Host Name as the cluster hostname (you can find it in the “Connect Client” section of the Redshift dashboard). The rest of the details are same as what we have provided during the cluster configuration step.
Loading Data from S3 to Redshift
Step 1: Creating the Table in Redshift Cluster
First of all, we need to create a table in the redshift cluster. We can either create the table manually by writing the CREATE command in any client tool like SQLWorkbench OR use PDI to generate the SQL and create the table in the Redshift cluster. Here I am using SQL Workbench/j
Assuming we have successfully built up your Amazon Redshift cluster and used Pentaho to connect to the cluster. Now we can try to loading the data using PDI.
We can take a simple Pentaho S3 CSV input and a Table Output step as below:
Step 2: Use S3 CSV input
This is my source data. It’s holding the data which I need to move to the Redshift database.
The dialog box of the S3 CSV input holds:
S3 Bucket: This is the Amazon S3 Bucket Name. You need to enter this in the dialog box in here.
Access Key & Secret Key are defined in C:\Users\username\.aws
Both the Access Key and Secret Key are available in the IAM Security Management console of your AWS account.
Delimiter: This is the delimited character used in CSV file.
Enclosure: This is the character used to enclose CSV file.
Step 3: Use Table Output
This step is designed primarily for loading the data from S3 bucket onto Redshift table.
The dialog box of the S3 CSV input holds:
Connection: Connection name created at step 5.
Target Schema: Click "Browse" to select database schema
Target Table: Click “Browse” to select a table to load data.
